sir,
Bridges.
With reference to my General Letter No. 110
dated 16th. February, 1910, and in compliance with His Excel-
-lency's minute dated 20th. rebruary, 1910, I have the honour to inform you that the work done or to be done to the Bridges
referred to in the report may be divided into the following:-
The abandonment of work done on Bridges
4, 7, 8, 5, 12 at a cost of $94,379.27.
(a)
(b)
The reconstructing of the above bridges at
a cost of $124,258.75. This involves no extra
expenditure to Government as had these bridges
been properly constructed in the first instance
they would have cost as much.
(c) Additions and improvements to Bridges 13, 14, 17,
18, 22, 22-a, 33, 35, 36, 38 at an estimated cost
of $20,564.40 As these should have been provided in the first instance, there is no extra expendi-
-ture involved.
The cause of failure in (a) has been due to
foundations being insufficient to carry the weight imposed;
and the use of Lime Concrete where cement Concrete should have been used. The defects in design under (c) are due to the backing over the arches being insufficient in quantity to keep the arch ring from springing up and so disarranging the parapet walls which results in their getting cracked in peculiar positions. Arched bridges should not have been put in, in places where the foundations were liable to settlement, or to scour
out.
